Eating out in Budapest and the surrounding shenanigans

Well here I am sat in front of my laptop with not a clue how to start a blog. I am unsure what a blog even is. After literally googling ‘how to write a blog’ I hope I now have somewhat of an idea what I should write about and where I should start. Here it goes…

In January I went to Budapest with two friends of mine, Tash and Zoe to celebrate Zoe’s Birthday. We started the day with a cheeky espresso Martini at Jamie’s Bar at Gatwick. Shortly after we boarded the plane, all seemed to be going swimmingly. That was until a string of announcements came from the captain reassuring us there was nothing to be concerned about, we were being diverted to Milan Malpensa due to a ‘technical fault’ with the aircraft. Being typically British teenagers, we assumed that was it. we were being abducted, never to be seen again. We were moved onto another plane along with our luggage which in our minds made it even worse, the thought of our plane being dumped and the last trace they had of us would be in Milan…

Of course, this was not the case at all. After boarding the new plane we soon arrived in Budapest. As we came out of the airport terminal we instantly saw the 100E bus we needed to board to get to our Hotel, The Exe Danube. However, this wasn’t as simple as it may sound, the machine we had to use buy our ticket had an English option which contributed to the ease of the task but due to our lack of patience we ended up buying the wrong ticket! Although, not realising this we tried to hop on to the bus. The driver soon stopped us and as we continued to get awfully muddled with the currency the driver quickly sorted the situation for us. The mistake didn’t cost us hardly at all as we found it unbelievable how cheap the public transport was, in fact everything was in the city.

Before long, we arrived in the centre of Budapest. Although, due to our delayed arrival and the time of year we arrived in the dark. We found our way to our hotel, set down a dead-end road under an arch, it seemed just perfect, away from the noise yet in midst of it all. The entrance foyer of the hotel was just as impressive as the modern exterior, with décor and furnishings resembling the 1920’s Art Deco period, it was a great bargain! After checking into our room and admiring the beautifully decorated and ultra clean en-suit we quickly got changed ready for a night out.

Making our way to reception we decided it would be sensible to ask where would be best to go for a pleasant yet affordable meal. The receptionist, Carlos was delighted to help us out, he rang a restaurant he was friendly with and booked us a table.

While taking in our surroundings we made our way. Following Carlos instructions, we found the restaurant ‘Ladó Café’. What we found when arriving was not at all what we were expecting, it was to exceed all expectations. From the moment opened the door and the sound of the live jazz band hit us to the moment we left it was just an incredible dining experience. We were shown to a table right at the top of the restaurant, just one table away from a stage. The ‘Hot Jazz Band’ played everything from classics to modern day hits. It was the first time myself and the girls agreed, had experience that kind of ambiance in a restaurant.

Finally, I’m getting to the point of this blog, the food! for starter I had, Goose Liver Pate with a chutney, for the main, traditional Hungarian Pork Medallions with Ratatouille and the largest amount of thin sliced fried potatoes I have ever had on a plate! We accompanied the meal with numerous cocktails and couldn’t even contemplate having a dessert although we did have to look at the menu. It was all delicious and the service was incredible.

Eventually we decided we must free up the table and continued the night in several bars.
